What is Aromatherapy and Herbal Medicine?

Aromatherapy is a term used frequently in the cosmetic industry as well as the natural and alternative medicine field. It is the use of aromatic essential oils for psychological and physical well-being.

Aromatic Essential Oils are volatile plant substances that are found within the leaves, bark, seeds, stems, roots, flowers, or fruit of plants. I like to think of each oil as the essence, life blood, or Qi of the plant.

Most essential oils are extracted through steam distillation. Depending on the type of plant and the part the oil is extracted from (i.e. leaves, roots, flowers, ect.) other methods like cold pressing may be used.  The purity and therapeutic properties of each oil is determined by the chemical constituents. These constituents can be affected by a number of different factors. Such as the part of the plant the oil comes from, the soil and environment it was grown in, if fertilizers were used and what kinds, the region and climate, and the harvest, season, and distillation methods used. All of these play a part in the purity and quality of the oil. Many oils that you may come across will be adulterated meaning they have been altered in some way.

Similar to Aromatherapy, Herbal Medicine relies on the same parts of the plants but rather than extracting the essential oil, the entire part of the plant is used fresh or dried to make medicinal remedies.

Both Aromatherapy and Herbal Medicine are key components to holistic health and every self-care routine.

Soon, I will be introducing herbal tinctures, teas, and bath additives from plants grown on my family farm here in the Pacific Northwest. Check back to the shop regularly as I am always crafting new things.
